I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed on BBC Radio Sussex, where I shared my personal journey of changing careers and offered advice for anyone considering a similar path. You can listen to the full interview here or click the play button below:
Below, I’ve summarised the key points from our conversation, focusing on practical tips for making a career change.
Changing careers can feel daunting, especially when juggling responsibilities, but it can also lead to greater happiness and fulfilment. As a career coach, I’ve not only made this leap myself but have also guided many others through the process. Here's a bit about my journey and some advice for anyone considering a change.
I know firsthand how it feels to be stuck in a job that doesn’t suit you. In my early 30s, I transitioned from a career in HR—a role that never gave me the people interaction I craved—to the work I do now as a career coach. It was a big risk, but retraining was the best decision I made. I haven’t looked back since, and the discomfort of change was worth it.
If you’re considering a career change or re-entering the workforce, the first step is to understand your strengths. Identify your favourite skills and know what truly motivates you. Are you driven by teamwork or independent work? Do you crave meaningful work, or are financial rewards your main motivation?
Values also play a crucial role in job satisfaction. Many people leave jobs because of a mismatch in workplace culture or values. Working in an environment where you feel appreciated and connected to your work’s purpose is vital.
Changing careers isn’t about diving in headfirst—it’s more like testing the waters. Research your options thoroughly, understand what the roles involve, the expected salary, and the work-life balance.
Networking is equally important. Speak to people in the fields you’re interested in, ask them what they love (and don’t love) about their jobs, and learn what they wish they knew before starting. Much of the job market operates on connections, with up to 80% of roles found through the hidden job market, so use your network to your advantage.
The job landscape is evolving, with more opportunities for flexible working like four-day weeks, term-time roles, or even starting your own business. These alternatives can provide a way to try something new without the full commitment of leaving your current job immediately.
For those considering entrepreneurship, I always advise thorough research and speaking with business professionals before making big decisions. But if you’re committed, the flexibility of running your own business can be incredibly rewarding.
Ageism is a real concern for many, but it’s often about finding the right role where experience is valued. Fields like coaching, counselling, and certain advisory roles appreciate the wealth of experience older candidates bring. Always test the ground through networking and conversations, which can open doors in the hidden job market.
You don’t have to make a drastic move to start exploring new possibilities. Take small steps: research new roles, network, and upskill on the side. You can keep your current job until the right opportunity comes along, minimising the risk and easing the transition.
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, career coaching can provide valuable support. I specialise in helping people understand their values, motivations, and skills to find a fulfilling career path. My approach is all about discovering what excites you and using that as a foundation for your next steps.
If you’re ready to explore a career change, I’d love to help you on that journey. Learn more here on my website about how I can support you.
